I have found that there are many opportunities available for both pilots and non-pilots in the SF bay area to volunteer or give back to the community. These include:
Non-profit organization where volunteers transport medical patients to life changing healthcare in facilities far from their homes
No cost to the patients, welcomes a wide range of volunteers and airplanes for transport
I flew several Angel Flights, and it was a great experience using my aviation skills in my community and getting to meet new people
Located at San Carlos Airport (KSQL) and is a nonprofit museum that promotes the wonders of aviation to visitors through exhibits and elaborate activities
Hosts seasonal events and exhibits, like a 'Thanksgiving Turkey Drop', offering visitors closeup experiences with the airport itself
Offers volunteering opportunities for teens in both their daily programs and summer camps
I volunteered during the daily shifts and assisted with certain exhibits and programs. Working alongside other teens, I found it a very welcoming and intriguing , learning new things everyday.
Non-profit organization run by the EAA which offers free introductory airplane flights for kids aged 8-17
Typically this their first exposure to general aviation as a whole and is free for the participants
Flight are given by certified volunteer pilots
There are many EAA chapters scattered across the U.S, look them up using this link
Palo Alto Airport holds an 'airport day' in which many visitors are allowed on the tarmac to view and sit inside various airplanes and helicopters, compete for prizes and learn about local/community organizations
This past year, I held a informational booth about helicopter training, as it was quite sparse in the area, offering my insights into pathways and careers in aviation and the importance of local airports like those in Palo Alto and San Carlos
Many airports hold an expo or 'airport day' so check with your local airport's website for information
Based in Palo Alto Airport, Urban Eagles is a non-profit organization that provides exposure, education and experiences of aviation to youth and young adults. Their mission is to spark an interest in people who otherwise would not have considered aviation as a career or passion
They also offer scholarships for student pilots, supplementary to ground and air training
I'm working with them on Free Helicopter Intro Flights for local students
